Geauga County Auditor Charles E. Walder hides behind the triennial update!
The State of Ohio requires Geauga County to review the last three years of property sales (2017, 2018, and 2019) and to trend the values to reflect market value changes. In short, that means raise our taxes.
On February 6, 2020, Geauga County Auditor Charles E. Walder lent his support in favor of House Bill 438, which would protect the pocketbooks of low-income seniors and disabled veterans by improving the state’s homestead exemption law.
He said, “There is a lot that can and should be done to assist people during this pandemic, in regard to their real estate property taxes.” So far, so good.
But at the same time that he was exaggerating his concern for seniors and disabled veterans, he was calculating the 2020 triennial update year for Geauga County. Also called tax increases.
On February 6, 2020, he talked about his concern for residents, four days later, in a Chagrin Valley Times interview, he stated, “In light of increased property values as a result of Geauga County’s 2020 triennial update, Auditor Charles Walder is calling upon taxing authorities to reduce taxes to ease the reappraisal burden on residents affected by the coronavirus pandemic.”
“Reappraisal burden” means the county is raising our taxes. We didn’t know this because his office couldn’t / wouldn’t send out notice of it to property owners. Why not? Covid — don’t ya know. Covid — the all-purpose word for no one doing their job for the past year (but still getting paid).
Walder gaslighted residents with his concerns, then slams them with the increase, all the while blaming the state. He would have been better off keeping his mouth shut.
More importantly, Walder he is NOT reducing HIS budget. He gave huge raises to his staff. No tax relief for us peasants but extra money for his.
Walder probably had a lot to learn when he came to the job, but the one thing he did not have to learn was how to be a political, self-serving hypocrite.
When Walder was hired by the county, he was the fiscal officer for Russell Twp. His wife, Karen, got that job when he left. Funny how that happens. Rumor is that she is so inept that when he leaves work in the county, he goes to Russell to also do her job. Shhh. Don’t tell anyone.
